Winter Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Electrical Panel Running Safely

You can always expect your home to use more energy during the winter. You’re spending more time indoors with the heat turned up, and you’re probably keeping the lights on longer as the days get shorter. This can be hard on your electrical system, especially if you live in an older home. You need to make sure that your electrical panel keeps working safely, so here are a few tips to help with that.

1. Avoid Overloading Your Circuits

The best way to avoid electrical problems this winter is to avoid overloading your circuits. Don’t plug too many devices or lights into one outlet, and look at your electrical panel to see where each breaker leads in your home. If it looks like you have too many power-hungry appliances in one place, move them to new locations and circuits to disperse power more evenly throughout your home. This also applies to holiday decorations. Space out your decorations whenever you can and keep multiple power strips on hand. You shouldn’t rely on just one or two.

2. Unplug Anything You’re Not Using

If you aren’t currently using a device or appliance, unplug it to save some power. And no, simply turning them off isn’t always enough. Many computers, game consoles and other electronics will still drain power when they’re plugged in even if you’re not actively using them.

3. Use Space Heaters Sparingly

Space heaters are great to have during a cold snap, but they use a lot of electricity and should be used sparingly. If you need to use a space heater, make sure it’s one of the only things plugged into an outlet, and don’t leave it running for hours on end. That will quickly turn it into a fire hazard as well as a load on your electrical system.

4. Keep a Backup Generator Handy

The last thing you want is to deal with a power outage in the middle of winter. If your home is prone to outages and other electrical issues, keep a backup generator on hand for emergencies. A smaller gasoline-powered generator can do in a pinch as long as you have a reliable supply of fuel. You can also have a permanent generator installed by a professional. A professional electrician will be able to calculate your home’s electricity needs and ensure that you have the right generator ready to go in case of an emergency.
